In 2007, Chris Harris makes his full-time debut in the FIM Speedway Grand Prix Championship. Chris is one of two British competitors in the event, the other being his Coventry team mate, Scott Nicholls. For further information about how you can support Chris and Scott in this years GP's log on to www.backingthebrits.com. Chris Harris began his racing career at the age of six and a half by competing in grass-track events. In 1998, aged 15, Chris progressed to speedway racing and he soon became regarded as one of Britain's brightest prospects for success on both the domestic and international stages. By 2003, Chris had enjoyed notable successes, winning the Premier League in 2000 with the Exeter Falcons, the Premier Trophy in 2002 with the Trelawny Tigers and, most notably, finishing runner up in the World Under-21 Championship in 2003. In June 2003 his good form was rewarded with a wild-card entry into the British Grand Prix, held at Cardiff's magnificent Millennium Stadium. During this period, Chris was able to take advantage of new rules introduced to assist young British riders and in 2002, whilst remaining with his Premier League team Trelawny, he took the step-up to ride in the Elite League with the Peterborough Panthers. He continued this arrangement into 2003 before deciding to concentrate on full-time Elite League Speedway in 2004. For 2004 Chris also decided to move clubs and joined the Coventry Bees, one of speedway's most historic teams. In this year Chris also took the opportunity to ride in the Swedish Elite League, joining Kaparna of Gothenburg, with whom he would continue to ride until the end of the 2005 season. Since joining Coventry, Chris has made superb progress both domestically and internationally. By the end of 2005 he was established as one of Coventry's top performers and the team had won the Elite League title. He had also made his debut for Team Great Britain in the Speedway World Cup and had finished runner-up in the Championship of Great Britain. In 2006, further success followed. Chris moved clubs in Sweden, joining Vastervik, and also elected to ride in the Polish league for the first time (with RKM Rybnik). Chris finished 2006 with a Knockout Cup winner's medal for Coventry, whilst his Swedish team, Vastervik, reached the Elite League final. Once again, he was able to represent Team GB in the Speedway World Cup, winning a bronze medal, and he progressed to the final round of the Grand Prix qualifying championship, finishing in fifth place, just two places away from automatically qualifying for the 2007 series. In October 2006, Chris received the news he had been hoping for. His good form over the course of the season, particularly in the final Grand Prix qualifying round, had earned him one of the four nominated slots for the 2007 Grand Prix series. He then went on to surprise the world when he won the British GP at Cardiff in 2007. For 2008, Chris remains with the Coventry Bees as they aim to retain the Elite League title they won in 2007. He also rides with Vastervik in Sweden and KM Ostow in Poland. He looks forward to a successful season and is confident of success with all of his clubs. |
